On September 1, 2019 the Bahamas experienced one of the worst natural disasters in its history. Hurricane Dorian, a Category 5 hurricane, sat over the islands for two days bringing massive destruction.

The area of North Abaco experienced a storm surge as high as it’s tallest point plus two-story tall waves. This community was completely devastated, killing many and unhousing thousands.

The Response

Disaster Response International team members volunteered on regular missions to North Abaco.  We bring a unique set of skills that allow us to be early responders after disasters.  We partnered with several other relief organizations in the following ways:

  • WATER: established, protected, and expanded desalination systems serving as the sole primary source of clean water to the area.  Provided showers and wash water. Began to repair and prep several 5,000 gallon tanks usable for water operations expansion.
  • SEARCH AND RESCUE: performed preliminary body recovery searches and developed plans for future recovery efforts.
  • EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT: advised local community and government officials and facilitated conversation between local groups to help establish consensus on a plan for area recovery.
  • MEDICAL: helped establish a clinic and provide it with power. As the sole source of water, medical care, food, a shower, wash water and supplies, the clinic became a community hub and served as foothold for communication and other activities.  We also established a network of pilots / aircraft as a medivac for critical health situations.
  • INFRASTRUCTURE: Developed and supported a supply hub for local residents. Cleared crucial pathways for foot and vehicle traffic.
